DOBRIN, PHILIP B., AND ALLEN A, &NICK. hj%ence of mmlmsmooth muscle on contractile meclzanics and elasticity of arteries, Am, J. Physiol. 2 17(6) : 1644-1651. 1969.---Segments of canine carotid artery were held at in situ length and studied in vitro after treatment with norepinephrine (NEpi) and after treatment with potassium cyanide (KCN). Activation of the vascular muscle caused contraction and greatly increased pressure-radius hysteresis, The blood vessel muscle exhibited an active stress-strain curve u:ith a maximum stress of .88 it: .10 x lo6 dynes/cm2 for the whole wall, or 2.73 X 10” dynes/cm2 for the estimated smooth muscle component of the wall. Activation of smooth muscle increased the elastic modulus when this was plotted as a function of strain. The active muscle exhibited a maximum elastic modulus of 3.99 A .08 x lo6 dynes/cm2 for the whole wall, or 12.66 x 106 dynes/cm2 for the estimated smooth muscle component of the tvall. Activation of smooth muscle decreased the elastic modulus when this was plotted as a function of pressure. This decrease leas attributed to the reduction in radius brought about by the active muscle.

Inactivation of serum response factor contributes to decrease vascular muscular tone and arterial stiffness in mice.

RATIONALE Vascular smooth muscle (SM) cell phenotypic modulation plays an important role in arterial stiffening associated with aging. Serum response factor (SRF) is a major transcription factor regulating SM genes involved in maintenance of the contractile state of vascular SM cells. OBJECTIVE We investigated whether SRF and its target genes regulate intrinsic SM tone and thereby arterial st...

Background: Hindlimb Unloading (HLU) is used to simulate microgravity in rats and has been shown to decrease contractile response in the abdominal aorta. The aim of present study was to investigate the contractile responses of smooth muscle of thoracic aorta following acute and chronic microgravity treatment.  Methods: Male adult rats (Wistar) were subjected to HLU for 3 and 20 days t...

Background and Purpose: Conventionally, the architecture of the artery wall is based upon the close-packed smooth muscle cells, endothelial and adventitial cells in both sides of internal elastic lamina (IEL). However, the adventitia and endothelium are now viewed as key players in vascular growth and repair. Recent work raises fundamental questions about the cellular heterogeneity of arterie...

Studies on the nature of a prostaglandin receptor in canine and rabbit vascular smooth muscle.

The contractile response of rabbit renal arteries and canine tibial arteries to prostaglandins A2, B2, F2alpha, E1, E2, D2, and B1 was associated with a reduction in total sulfhydryl group content of smooth muscle. The total sulfhydryl content of rabbit renal and canine tibial arteries and was not affected by norepinephrine or potassium chloride. Reduction of disulfide groups with dithiothreito...

Effects of Bunium persicum (Boiss.) Essential Oil on the Contractile Responses of Smooth Muscle (An in vitro Study)

Bunium persicum (Boiss.) is an economically important medicinal plant growing wild in arid regions in Iran. The essential oil of B. persicum (EOBP) was extracted using hydrodistillation. A total of eighteen compounds, representing 96.14 % of the oil was identified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS).The main compounds were cuminaldehyde (23.04 %), gamma-terpinene (14.48 %), trans-3...
